Nitrogen Deficiency in Plants

Just like humans, plants need to have adequate amounts of minerals in order to remain healthy. One of these includes nitrogen, an important aspect in the nucleic and protein build up in plants.

Symptoms of Nitrogen Deficiency in Plants
Plants suffering from nitrogen deficiency display the following traits:

paler green color on new leaves

smaller leaves in comparison to the normal size of these plant leaves with

sufficient nitrogen

old leaves have been noticed to turn pale green and yellow before falling from the

plant

slow growth in plants

red or purple hue found in the underside of leaves

easy wilting of plants under normal weather conditions

Ways of Restoring Ample Amount of Nitrogen in the Soil and Plants

The following are recommended treatment to return sufficient nitrogen into the soil:

use of water soluble fertilizers that may either be mixed or sprayed on the plants itself

adequate amount of fertilizer on the soil

application of natural sources for nitrogen on the soil like cottonseed meal, rabbit

droppings, feather meal

plant legumes alternately with your chosen crop to naturally restore nitrogen into

the soil

Precautions in Restoring Nitrogen into the Soil
Sufficient nitrogen into the soil is important, but do not excessively pour it into your soil. Too much nitrogen will not be healthy on your plants. It is harmful not only to your plants but also to animals and people, especially if you live near rivers or streams where groundwater is generated.
